Police are investigating another family massacre, this time on the north coast.
Eight members of the Sibiya family have died following an attack on their homestead in Matimatolo near KwaMaphumulo last night.
The police's Nqobile Gwala says a group of men entered one of the rondavels and opened fire on a 60-year-old woman and five children aged between two and 16 - before setting the structure on fire.
"The community members checked and they saw that the house was on fire. Attempts were made to rescue the family but unfortunately the fire was uncontrollable and all five family members died on the scene."
Gwala says the assailants then moved on to the next rondavel where another elderly woman and three children were staying.
"100 metres away from the first scene, gunshots were also heard and a house with four family members was also on fire - community members managed to rescue three children who sustained burn wounds but unfortunately the elderly woman died on the scene. She sustained a gunshot wound and burn wounds," she says.
Gwala says two of the children later died of their injuries in hospital. The suspects are still at large.
