Family has high hopes for Durban student activist's release

The mother of Fees must Fall activist, Bonginkosi Khanyile, who had been previously denied bail, is hopeful her son will be back home for Christmas this year.

Khanyile is appearing in the Pietermaritzburg High Court today to hear the judgement on his appeal to have a magistrates court ruling to deny him bail overturned.
The Durban University of Technology, is accused of possession of a weapon, contravention of the explosives act and obstruction of traffic amongst other charges.

He was arrested around three months ago at a protest for free education on Yusuf Dadoo Street in Durban.
His mom, Phumzile Kathini says she has never been without her son on Christmas.
"I have high hopes that the judge will grant him bail [today] - although one can never be sure with the law. I hope the judge grants him his freedom because our family would be happy if he could come home for the holidays. It will be the first time that my child spends Christmas in jail. It makes me ill," she said.
