"Don't play with fire, don't burn the garden, refuse or anything like that in, in these conditions due to the fact that the fire can get out of hand," says KZN Fire Protection Association General Manager, Simon Thomas.

The province's northern region is currently under an alert for high fire danger conditions.

Monday's Fire Danger Index climbed to category 75, which Thomas says is extremely dangerous.

The rating indicates that a blaze is difficult to control, and is likely to spread quickly posing a threat to lives and properties.

He says starting a fire under these conditions isn't just reckless, it's a criminal offence.

" [If you see] any sign of smoke, just report to your local fire protection association or fire brigade within your area of dwelling, so that the appropriate action can be taken.

"If you are a land owner, it is your duty and responsibility to ensure that, that fire is contained as quickly as possible before it causes any further damage."
