Expert: Zuma and Cabinet must resign if motion succeeds

Constitutional law expert, Pierre de Vos says a new president will need to be elected from the National Assembly within 30 days should today’s motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma succeed.

Professor Pierre de Vos 2
MPs will vote on the motion in secret later.

De Vos told East Coast Drive with Bongani and Mags that the President and his entire Cabinet will have to resign should 201 MPs vote in favour of the motion yesterday.

De Vos says it’s difficult to predict how today’s proceedings will unfold.

"Despite the fact that there will be a secret ballot, I will still be surprised if 201 members of the National Assembly, which is the required number for a majority, vote for a motion of no confidence. In the South African context, party loyalty is very strong," he said.

De Vos feels the ANC might also be worried about what happens if the vote succeeds, as the party might not be united on who it will vote in as the new president.
