Expect drop in matric pass rate - expert
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
We may see a drop in the matric pass rate for the class of 2021, but possibly not a substantial one.

Those are the views of Educational expert Professor Labby Ramrathan, as the country awaits the announcement of the matric results by the Basic Education minister later today.
"This has been seen in the marks that have been pushed up on the 24 subjects in which some of the marks were pushed up in the categorisation process. So I expect a drop in it but not substantial.
The UKZN professor says issues like rotational school schedules is one of the major factors that might have heavily impacted pupils.

"The context of covid has created a whole lot of disturbance in our lives. We paid attention to other things than schooling.
"So those students who want to pursue further studies beyond schooling, they have perhaps contributed a lot to their own studies and not rely on schooling to support them and they will be much better off."
He says those who have no interest in education beyond school are just merely there to complete school. "So that's the group we are concerned about."
