Basic Education happy only matric exam numbers will be published
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Deputy Minister of Basic Education Reginah Mhaule says the department appreciates the fact that names won’t be published in the media when the matrics receive their results.
The High Court in Pretoria this week ruled that matric results may be published this week.
However, the names of pupils won’t appear in the media.
Mhaule visited some Pietermaritzburg schools on Wednesday as pupils in coastal regions returned to class for new school year.
The department had said that won’t publish the results in newspapers this year - citing rules contained in the Protection of Personal Information Act.
But this decision was overturned in court.

Mhaule says they had been waiting for the court outcome as there was no precedent with the new act.
"We will appreciate what the act has done… the court ruling does not allow the department to write the names of children. We are only going to write the exam number. It's easy, what we are trying to protect will be protected.”
Meanwhile, matrics who sat for the Independent Examination Board exams are celebrating a 98.39% pass rate.
Matrics this year had to contend with a second year of Covid-19 restrictions.
