KwaZulu-Natal's former head of Treasury has begun serving a 15-year prison sentence for fraud, corruption and money laundering.
The Pietermaritzburg High Court dismissed Dumisani Shabalala's application for leave to appeal his conviction and sentence on Tuesday.
The court last week said that his sentence for four crimes would run concurrently.
Shabalala received a R1.5 million kickback from Intaka Investments for helping the company secure a R44 million water purification plant contract.

This happened between 2004 and 2007, when he was the chairperson of the procurement committee.
"He advised the court that he wanted to make an application for leave to appeal his sentence and conviction," says KZN NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara.
"The court allowed this and Shabalala’s bail was extended until today. However, following today’s refusal of the application for leave to appeal, Shabalala’s bail has been cancelled and he will have to start serving his sentence.”
