eThekwini's underprivileged encouraged to start planting
The eThekwini Municipality has encouraged poor and low-income earners who've been left hungry by the coronavirus lockdown to consider other ways to support their families.
The City handed over food parcels to 49 farm dwellers in Verulam and Mtatengayo as part of its COVID-19 social relief programme.
Economic Development Chair Sipho Kaunda says they encouraged people to grow their own food.
"We are encouraging workers to plant. We understand that they are here to work, but they must also have their small gardens as well so that they are able to survive if hard times arrive.
"They will be given some seedlings so that they can be able to plant and we know that we have a farm in this area that belongs to the community. Therefore, we would like to see the community utilising this farm successfully," he says.
