Workers from the water and solid waste departments have been on strike over salary grievances.

As a result, refuse in and around the city hasn't been collected.

The city's private contractors have been brought in to clean up the city centre, which has been left in a mess following protests by municipal workers.

The streets in and around Durban have been left covered in refuse since the city's refuse cleaners went on strike.

53 MK Vets were given what workers have described as selective promotional appointment which saw salaries doubled. Workers are now demanding that their grades be upgraded and have stopped working.

The matter is currently being heard before the Central Bargaining Council.

Municipal spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela says refuse that is life threatening is being prioritised.

"We are working around the clock - to ensure our residents are not deprived of their constitutional right to receive basic services. We appreciate everything our residents have done in terms of bearing with us. To the business community, we sincerely apologise."

Mayisela says contractors have also been hired to make sure water is available 24/7.
