eThekwini Water workers demanding higher pay

Officials at eThekwini say they are still working to resolve the strike by workers in the water department - but residents who have been hit by supply disruptions are growing frustrated.

Workers affiliated to municipal workers unions, IMATU and SAMWU downed tools at the Pinetown and Springfield depots on Wednesday.   

They want to be moved up to grade 10 salaries from grade 4 - after MK veterans employed by the city were bumped up to the higher pay grade.

IMATU's Stanley Khoza says it's a legitimate grievance.

"This will not just affect the workers - it affects the whole of the municipality. The grievances on the table affect every employee. There's no one who doesn't want to be elevated in terms of the pay grade. Every employee will wish to be on higher grade."

Residents in areas in the western part of eThekwini - have been left high and dry - with reports water infrastructure being sabotaged. 

Collin Fourier from Kloof says they haven't had water for several days.

"It has been a real pain not to have water, it's an essential necessity. It's difficult to operate a household without water," he said. 

Water has since been restored in Kloof.
