eThekwini Ward 14 deputy chairperson gunned down

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has confirmed that its deputy chairperson in eThekwini's Ward 14 has been gunned down.

Officials say Cassim Phiri was attacked by gunmen after a party meeting in Mariannhill, west of Durban, on Tuesday night.
They say they are disturbed by the killing and have called on Police Minister, Bheki Cele to launch a probe.

Ward 14 covers including Dassenhoek, Mariannhill, Winston Park, Klaarwater, KwaNdengezi and Thornwood, among others.
Party officials in eThekwini say Phiri was also the deputy secretary of the Henry Bona Zone and served in the ANC Youth League and other structures over the years.
The region's leadership says it will visit the Phiri's family on Wednesday.
