SALGA concerned over spate of attacks on KZN public officials
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) says it's deeply concerned about the spate of killings of public representatives in KZN.
Ward councillors in eThekwini, uMsinga and KwaMaphumulo were gunned down in recent weeks.
SALGA president Bheke Stofile says these attacks stem from what the Moerane Commission pointed to in its report several years ago.
"One of the factors raised by the Moerane Commission in KZN was politically influenced killings."
The report by the judicial inquiry into political killings in KZN found that there was a complex matrix of criminal and political associations.

Stofile says the statistics are shocking.
"The councillors that have been killed or assassinated is more than 300 and this number is rising every day. This matter to us is a concern because it is an intimidation and threat to public office bearers in the local space.
"If this is not dealt with it will then threaten any other individuals that might want to serve as public office bearers or officials in the municipal space."
