eThekwini urges residents to check utility bills

eThekwini Municipality has issued an important message to ratepayers.

The city says there have been some water and electricity billing issues - causing unusually high bills. eThekwini's put the inaccuracies down to human error - among other things.  

The Head of Revenue Management says when processing more than a million bills per month - incorrect billings can sometimes go unnoticed. 

Peet du Plessis says when ratepayers are charged incorrectly - it could be the result of meter reading challenges and in some instances, human error during the process of capturing readings.

He says property value, following the recent valuation phase, and changes in tariffs also determine the final amount on your utility bill. 

If water charges are unusually high, you're advised to check for a possible water leak first, before querying the amount. 

The municipality is urging residents to check their bills on a monthly basis and contact the city if there are any issues with their accounts.
