eThekwini urged to disconnect static water tanks
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has urged residents in Durban's northern parts to disconnect their static water tanks from the city's reticulation system.
The municipality previously said that some 70 per cent of properties in the city had purchased storage tanks, which have put a strain on the Phoenix 2 Reservoir Zone.
"It’s good to have tanks to conserve water, but when you collect it to our reticulation process, you are actually taking water away from the system, which is supposed to fill a particular reservoir,” Kaunda said.
"So let us disconnect all the static tanks to allow the water to flow so all other residents can be able to access water properly."

Residents in Verulam, Tongaat and other areas north of Durban have been plagued by intermittent supply for months.
Community members have taken to the streets this week to demand an end to the crisis.
Kaunda said the municipality is experiencing various issues.
"That was, as a result, when Umngeni Water applied the shutdown, and since the shutdown, many areas have not been receiving water as expected. They also commissioned the new pipe, and that pipe was also affected, causing a major challenge."
