eThekwini tap water safe to drink – DUT expert
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Scientists at the Durban University of Technology say the tap water in eThekwini is safe to drink.
"We conducted microbiological testing on the water to ensure that it meets the South African national standard for one so that it complies with drinking water quality standards," says director at the Institute for Water and Wastewater Technology Professor Faizal Bux.
"We did the sampling last week and the analysis then. Fortunately from our findings, it shows that the tap water quality is of good quality and of fordable standard."

He says they conducted tests following concerns about the safety of the water in the city's taps.
"If your water is clear, there's no suspended solids and if your water tastes normal, it shouldn't be a problem. However, if you want to be on the safe side it's best that you boil your water.
"According to law, the municipality should be ensuring that your water that comes out from your tap is at pristine quality and satisfies the South African national standards."
Bux says they are also continuously testing samples of wastewater from sewage plants in eThekwini to monitor the levels of Covid-19.
