Tongaat residents are warning of further protests after the City stopped supplying water through the emergency pipeline from Nyaninga Reservoir to the Tongaat South Reservoir.

eThekwini Municipality says supply has been paused until further notice because of concerns about the quality of the water.

In a statement on Thursday night, the city said it had discovered that water from boreholes privately constructed by residents had seeped into the reservoir's reticulation.

The northern Durban area had their supply severely disrupted in April when the floods damaged the local water treatment works.

Community activist Teddy Naidoo says the situation in the area is really bad.

"Something is not right. We are really right now frustrated residents of Tongaat and we cannot continue like this. Now to me, the residents are saying this is not on, we are going to embark on another strike as a result of this.

"I am thinking about the elderly and people who can't go to the shops to buy their 5 litre water or get to the tanker to get water to have a bath. It is a really serious situation in Tongaat."

Affected areas include Watsonia, Buffelsdale, Mithanager, Trurolabds, Gandinagar, Chelmsford Heights, and part of the CBD.

Residents who're still receiving water from the Tongaat South Reservoir are being urged to boil it before drinking.

The City's reminding consumers that borehole water should not be used for drinking.
