The money was a donation from the Motsepe Foundation and was supposed to be allocated to grieving families, who lost loved ones, to help them with burial arrangements among other things.

During a media briefing on Tuesday to mark the one-year anniversary of the April floods, Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said he is aware of the negative perception the missing funds issue has created around the city.

He also promised to get to the bottom of it.

"The Motsepe Foundation is currently investigating how the 30 million flood donation was utilised by the government. We would like to ensure the public that we support the investigation to unearth any undoing and we will be cooperating with all the relevant authorities.

"As leadership of the municipality we remain committed to fight corruption whenever it rises its ugly head."
