WATCH: Average of 80% water supply restored since floods, says Kaunda

A year on since the floods, eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda says water supply in affected regions has been restored to an average of over 80%.
On 11 April last year, parts of KwaZulu-Natal were lashed by torrential downpours, dumping four months' worth of rainfall in a day.
This unleashed unprecedented floods that caused mudslides, washed away roads, bridges and uprooted trees.
Over 400 people died and thousands were left homeless.
In eThekwini, water and electricity infrastructure was severely damaged.
Mayor Kaunda visited Umlazi on Tuesday to mark a year since the natural disaster.

He said after the storm, water supply in some areas dropped drastically, while residents in Tongaat went without for several months.
"In the inner west region which covers areas such as Botha's Hill, KwaNyusa, Luganda, Nagina and Thornwood, water supply has improved from 30 percent to 95 percent.
"In the central region, which, includes Chatsworth, Klaarwater and surrounding areas supply has improved from 45 percent to 90 percent. The southern region has improved from 15 percent to 75 percent. This can be attributed to the repairs we have completed on the Umlazi canal and Prince Mshiyeni Hospital pipeline."

At the same time, the city is being questioned about how R30 million aimed at helping the flood victims was used.
The money was donated by the Motsepe Foundation.
Kaunda said he's well aware of the negative perception the situation paint, given the recent looting of other emergency funding.
