eThekwini ratepayers: Residents can't afford latest tariffs
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The eThekwini Ratepayers Protest Movement says the reductions in the proposed tariff increases are a slap in the face for residents.
Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda announced the adjustments at a full council meeting at the Durban ICC on Friday
Water tariffs dropped from 14.9 percent to 12.9 percent, while electricity has been reduced to 12.72 percent.
The tariff increases for rates, sanitation and refuse have also been adjusted down.

The movement's Asad Gafar says it's not in the interest of ratepayers.
"If he would had listen us we would have come up with a far lower percentage. In the tariffs they are proposing now there is no way anyone can afford these. Many businesses are going to be forced to close down and many residents who are already in debt are going to go further into debt."
