eThekwini property audits must be conducted: Mayor

eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede says the municipality wants to know exactly how much land and how many properties it owns.

Gumede says the city manager must conduct an audit on land and buildings in Durban.
She says an audit is important for future developments in the city.
"If we are talking about issues of radical economic transformation, those who want to utilise those buildings and want to buy land - it must be properly structured because it's important," she said.

Last week, the Auditor General identified eThekwini as being among the worst transgressors when awarding tenders. Nearly 400 suppliers were awarded, with fraudulent documents.
City officials tabled a report outlining that there has been a decrease in irregular expenditure from R1.3-billion in 2011/2012 to R208-million in 2015/2016, saying they're working to reduce irregular expenditure.
The city's council sitting was held at the Durban International Convention Centre yesterday.
