Officials tabled a report at an Executive Committee meeting yesterday - outlining irregular expenditure for the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 financial years.

The City was identified by the Auditor General last week as being among the worst transgressors when awarding tenders to nearly 400 suppliers with fraudulent documents.

eThekwini released a statement last night saying the report was to inform Council of the non-compliance with the Supply Chain Management Policy - resulting in irregular expenditure incurred by the municipality.

The report also highlighted the processes being followed to deal with irregular expenditure.

The City says there has been a significant decrease in irregular expenditure from R1.3-billion in 2011/2012 to R208-million in 2015/2016. Total irregular expenditure to date for the 2016/2017 financial year amounts to nearly R33.8-million.

eThekwini says this shows it is committed to reducing irregular expenditure.

Deputy City Manager for Finance, Krish Kumar says checks and balances are in place.
