This after an audio recording - apparently of Gideon Phungula calling the city treasurer, Krish Kumar, the C-word was leaked in September.

In the recorded phone call - Phungula reportedly explains how they plan to let an employee suspended for alleged corruption off the hook.

Phungula also apparently admits that while is highly competent, there was a political element to his appointment.

The city's spokesperson Mandla Nsele says he can't confirm Phungula's been fired but according to the DA, it's in possession of the ruling.

DA eThekwini caucus leader, Nicole Graham says they welcome the axing.

"We are very pleased by this judgement. It is an important ruling - he was found guilty last week and I believe sanctioned on Friday. Hopefully, it is an important benchmark for the city - for those who treat their colleagues poorly but also those who are not focused on delivering to residents," Graham said.
