KZN DA calls for axing of eThekwini official over racist remark
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
The DA in KwaZulu-Natal has called for the removal of an eThekwini municipal official, who appeared before a disciplinary hearing that found him guilty of racism and hate speech.
Gideon Phungula - the head of the Municipality's Legal and Compliance Unit - had been heard, in a recording, allegedly calling fellow Indian colleagues the C-word.
Mayor Zandile Gumede says they'll only make a decision on the way forward once the entire legal process has wrapped up.
The DA's Nicole Graham says they've reported the matter to the SA Human Rights Commission.
"We have requested that the city manager suspend him. There is no place for people who behave like that, and no space for people who have those kinds of opinions. People of the city deserved better," Graham said.
