eThekwini moves ahead with salary increases amid criticism

eThekwini Municipality says it's not backtracking on a decision to hike the salaries of staff by 7%.

The City's been criticised for the move - as it's also proposed tariff increases which have left ratepayers fuming.

electricity and water prices by 6,9% and 9,9% respectively.The cost of rates and refuse would go up by similar margins.
Municipal spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela's explained why - despite these tough financial times - they'll be going ahead with salary increases.
"This is an agreement that was entered into by the City in the past two/three years, of which it is binding.
"But also it is not the decision to be taken by the City unilaterally not to increase salaries. In the event that engage, we will have to engage with the unions and see how we move forward."
