eThekwini: Monitor water reports before eating sardines
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The eThekwini Municipality is urging sardine enthusiasts to check reports on the latest water quality results before consuming any fish.
It issued the appeal after a local butcher said it will not sell sardines to the public until it received E.coli clearance from its suppliers.
Goolam Essack, who's been fishing for 60 years, says this isn't something people should be worried about.

"If you look at sardines and you look at local fish - local fish says here in KZN maybe that fish has got E. coli, but sardines is coming from cold waters and it has got a lot of oil on it, it never pick up E. coli, that sardine is travelling."
With the annual sardine run underway, Durban fishermen are preparing their nets for a big haul.
Essack says they expect to net more fish after some were caught on Amanzimtoti beach on Tuesday.
Shoals of the silverfish have been swimming up the coast, in a marine phenomenon dubbed 'the greatest shoal on earth'.
