Significant sardine activity on South Coast, says KZN Sharks Board
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The KZN Sharks Board says it's closely monitoring this year's sardine activity with the silverfish already swimming up the coast.
It says the South Coast has reported significant activity.
The board's Wayne Harrison says since Friday a massive shoal began making its way up from Port Edward.
"These shoals made their way right up to Amanzimtoti, Warner Beach, Winklespruit.
"Unfortunately, this morning it has been very quiet. Although there has been a shoal of sardines spotted on the back-line, nothing has been netted. The netters are all standing by and the problem is we got a 1.4-metre swell."
Harrison says, for now, they've taken a decision to keep shark nets up.
"We got gear in the water. We have been in communication with the local authorities about it and also we have chatted with lifeguards. We have asked them to be more cautious and vigilant.
"If you, as a member of the public want to go and swim, take caution, consult the lifeguards and keep an eye on the water."
