eThekwini loses half its water, SAHRC inquiry hears

eThekwini's deputy mayor Philani Mavundla says the city is losing more than half of its water due to many factors, including illegal connections.

Mavundla was at the South African Human Rights Commission's inquiry into water access in KZN on Wednesday. 


He took the place of mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, who called in sick.

"The second being where the infrastructure itself has given up, it can't hold that water anymore and to find out that is a job on its own," said Mavundla. 


He says some of the city's 27 wastewater treatment plants are also not functioning.

"Of the plants that we have, we are our wastewater treatment works almost 17 of them have been run to total complete failure. They don't meet any of the specs that are there, which then cause other problems."
