SAHRC hears more boreholes needed to ease KZN water woes

Installing more boreholes in KwaZulu-Natal can mitigate the province's water problems.

This is according to a hydrologist, who's urging municipalities to consider this option. 

 

Professor Peter Ochalla of ADURO Holdings was one of the expert witnesses to give evidence at the South African Human Rights Commission's investigation into water access in KZN on Monday. 

 

He believes it's time to look at boreholes as a solution to bulk water access, especially in isolated areas in the province. 

 

"It has proven very useful after they boreholes that were drilled since corona-period some of them were compromised in terms of water quality."

"Therefore some now, in some municipalities are being replaced or they are putting osmotic generators next to the boreholes. 

 

"The water from the osmotic generator for drinking and cooking is salty put can be used for other things." 

 

"Seven percent of South Africans that go directly faecal release in the bush. As we talk now the majority of people can't use their toilets. 


"That is a big problem because it comprises the groundwater quality and surface water quality because of this kind of interruption."
