eThekwini implements water rationing
Updated | By Tamasha Khanyi
Several parts of eThekwini will experience water rationing.

"The demand for water in eThekwini continues to increase and outstrip available supply, putting significant strain on the system," says City spokesperson Gugu Sisilana.
"This is exacerbated by a reduction in bulk water supply since uMngeni-uThukela Water implemented its water curtailment in October last year."
The City's introduced the measures to manage supply constraints, to areas supplied by Reservoir 2 at the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works.
These include Umlazi, Westville and Queensburgh.

It comes several days after mayor Cyril Xaba announced the water and sanitation turnaround strategy business plan would be tabled next week to deal with the City's water challenges.
City spokesperson Gugu Sisilana says the rationing will assist in building storage capacity.
"Rationing is done to build storage. Water is reopened when there are sufficient water levels. Rationing also ensures equitable water supply as it is done rotationally.
"The City reiterates its call against the connection of static tanks to the Municipal reticulation network. The effect of too many static tanks is that available water supply is not shared equitably as water fills up static tanks first which contributes to reservoirs getting depleted quickly.
"Residents are encouraged to practice rainwater harvesting for additional storage."
