Staff members protested in the city centre over the weekend, demanding full time employment with the municipality.

They downed tools on Friday, taking to the streets of the CBD, where rubbish and other debris were thrown onto roads and pavements.

EThekwini's Mandla Nsele says they have met with workers and while negotiations are still continuing - employees have agreed to go back to work.

They've also promised to clear the backlog of uncollected refuse in the city.

"We would like to apologise to our residents for the non-collection of refuse in some parts of the city which was due to an employee protest. I am happy to announce that collection will resume following a fruitful meeting we had with our staff members. Our staff members will work around the clock to ensure that the backlog is completed," he says.
