eThekwini axes murder-accused councillor
Updated | By Newswatch
A murder-accused eThekwini councillor has been removed from the city council.
Ward 101 councillor Muzimuni Ngiba is accused of murdering ANC members Siyabonga Mkhize and Mzukisi Nyanga in Cato Crest in 2021.
Mkhize and Nyanga were killed while campaigning in the run-up to the local government elections.
Mkhize had been chosen as the party's candidate for Ward 101. He won it posthumously.
Ngiba then ran in the by-election and won.
Ngiba’s stint was short-lived when he was arrested in connection with the murders in May last year.
Newswatch reported in June this year that he was still on the city's payroll.
In a statement on Friday, eThekwini said a meeting was held earlier this year regarding Ngiba's absenteeism.
He was found guilty of breaching the Code of Conduct for Councillors after missing three consecutive meetings.
In June, a recommendation was then submitted to Cogta MEC that he be removed.
The city said the MEC has now approved Ngiba's removal.
Ngiba is awaiting trial.
