Muzimuni Ngiba, who is an awaiting-trial prisoner, faces a charge of murder.

He was arrested in May last year for allegedly killing his predecessor Siyabonga Mkhize in the run-up to the November 2021 local government elections.

Despite being behind bars for 12 months, Ngiba is apparently still on the city's payroll.

On Wednesday, the eThekwini Municipality approved a recommendation by the Cooperative Governance MEC to remove him as a councillor.

One of the political parties in the council, ActionSA, says it supports the decision.

The party's provincial chairperson, Zwakele Mncwango says they have been advocating for Mkhize's removal for some time.

"We are happy the speaker has finally succumbed to the pressure and the recommendation was passed unopposed. This is not a victory for ActionSA, it's a victory for ratepayers of eThekwini because finally money will be well spent on other important things than paying a jailed councillor."
