Load shedding blamed for Durban Harbour sewerage spill
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
eThekwini Municipality has blamed rolling blackouts for the sewerage spill in the Durban Harbour.
The city's Msawakhe Mayisela says it's beyond their control.
"We do concede that we have got challenges with regard to our Mahatma Gandhi Pump Station. This is as a result of unrelenting load shedding, which is creating a lot of problems for us."
However, he has given the assurance that the Mahatmi Ghandi pump station is being repaired and the spill is being contained.
But environmental activist Desmond D'sa is convinced the city is only using load shedding to shift blame for its deteriorating pipe works.
"All the sewerage pipe works are busting in every community. In every community it's a regular occurrence every day and they are failing to replace those pipelines so this is bigger than what you have ever seen - where money has been squandered that ratepayers are paying.
"They are definitely hiding behind load shedding, if that was the case they could have bought generators. They could replace it very easily and put in renewable energy. This has been going on for years."
