Eskom should turn to ocean to tackle energy crisis - expert

An environmental expert says the ocean has the biggest potential to help solve some of the country's problems, including our energy crisis.

Coastal marine researcher and lecturer at the Mangosuthu University of Technology Trevor Govender made the comments on World Oceans Day.

He says Eskom should look to the seas in its efforts to keep the lights on.

"South Africa is very blessed. We have 3 000 kilometre length of ocean along our coast and this is where Eskom needs to look at options so we can actually store these wave generators just along the coast and we can sort out at least 40 to 50 percent of our power problems."

Govender also believes a middle ground can be found on issues such as fracking.

"People need to live but we can't come with hard-headed nature conservationists and fighting cooperates and industry.

"Conservationists and the economists and industries are not talking and once they start talking ideas over the table. I believe that everyone will be happy and the planet as a biosphere will be sustained, and we can lead a legacy for the future generation."
