Eskom: SA's cost of electricity still very low
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The national energy regulator Nersa has heard that the cost of electricity in South Africa is still very low compared to other parts of the world.
Eskom CFO Calib Cassim has made a submission on the fourth day of public hearings into the power utility's application to Nersa for a 20.5% tariff increase from April.
"Eskom is still in the lower core trial both on residential indicated by the blue shaded areas fro South Africa, both on residential as well as industrial cost of electricity."
On affordability of electricity for the poor, Cassim said there needs to be other policies from the government to help protect them.
"There is free basic electricity available, maybe the communication around that is not adequate. We maybe need to revisit that to make sure the access and the utilisation of free basic electricity is taken up.
"I know stakeholders have also asked, can the 50 kilowatt per hour per month be increased? and like the chair and Mr Mhize said for government to do that is comes at a cost."
