The National Senior Certificate (NSC) results were released on Friday morning.

The Department of Basic Education says matriculants produced high quality passes last year.

The pass rate climbed to 76.4 percent with 36 percent of candidates qualifying for Bachelor studies at universities.

KwaZulu-Natal boasts the most number of passes with distinctions in the country at over 61 000.

But the province saw a slight decline in its pass rate from 2020's 77.6 percent to 76.8%.

Minister Angie Motshekga says Ugu is the leading district in KZN with schools in the south coast municipality achieving an overall pass rate of 80.4 percent.

"The high quality passes we have archived this year especially the numbers of Bachelors and Diploma passes - the overall pass mark and the passes with distinctions even in critical subjects are a hallmark of a performance of the class of 2021."
