Residents of areas including KwaNdengezi, Hillcrest and Kloof have been complaining about a strong odour they say is emanating from the site with some having lodged formal complaints with the department.

Confirming that Environmental Affairs has issued it a notice of suspension, CEO Dean Thompson says their provisional advice is that an appeal will be filed against the department's directive.

Thompson believes that not all relevant information has been properly considered.

He says they shared with officials fresh data from three real-time air quality monitors installed recently in communities around the landfill, indicating the presence of high levels of sulphur dioxide - a gas Thompson says is typically produced by combustion processes and does not emanate from landfills.

Thompson believes this is yet to be followed up on by authorities.
