Environmental Dept's plea against plastic pollution
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
KwaZulu-Natal Environmental Affairs MEC, Sihle Zikalala says individuals, communities and industries in the province need to do their bit to reduce plastic waste in an effort to address climate change as well as plastic and air pollution.
The department said earlier this year that 20 percent of KwaZulu-Natal's surface area is listed as threatened and critically endangered ecosystems.
Zikalala says despite the "no straws" campaign, a large amount of plastic products, which are not biodegradable, are still entering the environment.
"We continue to work hard on addressing issues of pollution. We have our stations monitoring pollution in particular areas and we will continue to ensure that those who are defaulting are punished seriously," Zikalala said.
