World Environment Day: A little change goes a long way
Updated | By Portia Cele
On this year's World Environment Day, conservationists are encouraging the public to #beatplasticpollution.
Commemorated annually on June 5, the purpose is to create awareness while harnessing individual and communal actions - to do something positive and results-based for the environment.
The United Nation says at least eight million metric tonnes ( a metric tonne is about a 1000 kilograms) of plastic ends up in oceans. By 2050, the UN estimates, the world's oceans will have more plastic than marine life.
African countries Rwanda and Kenya, introduced a total ban on the production, sale, and use of plastics - in 2004 and 2017 respectively.
Although South Africa has not yet implemented a complete ban, it has reduced plastic use by putting into effect a plastic bag levy back in 2003.

As per this year's Budget Speech, the plastic bag levy increased by 50% to 12 cents per bag.
But items such as a beverage bottle, a plastic spoon or a straw should be replaced by environmentally friendly alternatives.
Donna Mari-Noble, from recycling company, Mpact says separating household waste is one way to start.
