Energy expert fears Nersa will grant Eskom 32% tariff hike
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
An energy expert
says it would not be surprising if Eskom is granted a go-ahead for a hefty
electricity price hike on Thursday.
National energy regulator Nersa is expected to announce how much Eskom can hike electricity prices for the 2023/24 financial years later.
The cash-strapped power utility is seeking a 32% tariff hike.
Energy expert Tshepo Kgadima says this will put a strain on households and businesses.
"In entirety, we are seeing Nersa that has failed, notwithstanding the catastrophe that will accrue to the economy of South Africa and the actual financial ruling that will be meted to the people of this country, the electricity users and well as the financial losses that Eskom will suffer.

Kgadima says the 32% tariff increase cannot be justified.
"It is extortionist and exorbitant, but in the likelihood, Nersa will grant this and push the 32% increase because Nersa has ceased to be an independent energy regulator.”
