Emotional scenes in Mariannhill after deadly police shootout
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Members of the Marianhill community are trying to identify relatives who may be among the group of suspects killed in a shootout with police.
Detectives from the SAPS Stabilisation Task Team acted on a tip-off and swooped on the gang in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Earlier, two mortuary vans arrived and were ushered to the homestead by detectives.
Members of the SAP Forensic Unit were then seen carrying the bodies of the suspects, which were wrapped in body bags, out of the one-bedroom homestead before they were loaded onto the vehicles.
Outside the cordoned-off area, residents who say their family members lived in the home gathered.
They were taken to the van, and an identification process unfolded.
Emotional scenes played out.
