Emergency call centre staff go on strike
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
About 5000 10111 call centre staff who deal with emergency calls and dispatching of emergency vehicles across the country will go on strike today.
The SA Policing Union says workers feel that nothing's been done to resolve issues over salary increases - after their march to the police minister's office earlier this year.
SAPU General Secretary, Oscar Skommere says members marched to the police ministers office not too long ago demanding an increase in their salaries. Skommere says nothing has been done to resolve their grievances.

"They are the ones who promised the members to upgrade them from salary 5 to salary 7. They have done studies, job evaluations and recommended that the outcome be implemented. They are refusing to implement that. When you strike, you stay at employer's premises. We are not going to be performing any duties. We are going to be striking," he said.
Meanwhile, the SAPS says police officers would be deployed to the call centres to ensure that operations countrywide - aren't affected.
