"She informed the police that the child was assaulted by another child with a towel. She promised to resolve the matter amongst the children. On Sunday, new information emerged when photos of the victim were circulating on social media.
The police immediately responded and the child was removed to a place of safety with the assistance of the social worker. A case was then opened. A 16-year-old boy who is a relative was placed under arrest and was released into the parents’ custody.
"He will appear before the Port Shepstone Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. An eight-year-old child will be later handed over to her biological mother."
Department of Community Safety's Gugu Sisilana said: "It is alleged that the child had become a victim of constant abuse and assault in their household.
"MEC Mshengu commended police for arresting the alleged perpetrator. He said police will work closely with social workers to ensure that this case receives priority."
