Election date set as voter registration closes
Updated | By Natarah Nadesan
Registering to vote in this year's general elections has closed - at midnight. It follows yesterday's proclamation of the election date.
The Independent Electoral Commission says this also allows political parties to start the process of nominating candidates on the IEC's online system.
Those living and working abroad can also apply to vote at their respective missions.
The IEC's Kate Bapela says the election timetable is due to be discussed today by the National Party Liaison Committee - before being gazetted.

She says it will outline key dates leading up to the polls.
"When you look at the steps that we have to undertake as a country - it will take us 27 steps to reach up to May the 8th where we cast our ballot. It's one document that we'll watch very closely. As part of our responsibility, we will make sure that we remind South Africans - even in the case of special voting," Bapela said.
