National spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo says about 300 protesters, believed to be residents of Dalton Hostel, torched a vehicle and a guardhouse on Sydney Road on Thursday night.

They also damaged an admin block at eThekwini TVET College.

A case of public violence is being investigated. No arrests have been made.

Naidoo has confirmed the protest was over this week's elections.

"They claim that the reason for the protest was that they were aggrieved because their names had not appeared on the voters roll even though they had registered. They claim they were unable to cast their vote as a result of that.

"So far, we haven't had any reports of any injuries. The matter is still under investigation. Police are monitoring the area."

The Independent Electoral Commission says it's unfortunate the protest turned violent.

It says the matter is in the hands of the police.
