Elderly woman, two children killed in lightning strike near Ixopo

Local government says at least three people have died during the powerful storms that rolled across parts of KwaZulu-Natal this week.

A lightning strike killed three members of a family near Ixopo. 


Cooperative Governance officials say a 69-year-old woman and two children, aged 10 and 13 years, died when lightning struck their home in the uBuhlebezwe Local Municipality. 


One person, who was hurt in the tragedy, was taken to hospital on Wednesday.

"We have assigned disaster management teams to provide the necessary support to the affected family," says the department's spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila. 


"The inclement weather conditions that were experienced by parts of the province yesterday uprooted trees and damaged both public and private infrastructure. Disaster management teams continue to assess the extent of the damage in the affected areas. 


"We continue to plead with our communities to exercise all caution whenever a weather warning is issued by the South African Weather Service, these warnings provide crucial information which can help to save lives."
