Thandi Ngcobo from KwaMashu says the rack crashed onto her right foot while she was getting a basket, causing it to swell.

The 61-year-old Ngcobo says the shop's security guard helped her to sit down and when the store manager came - they called a pharmacist from Checkers Hyper.

"My ankle was very swollen. He said he thinks I should go to hospital. He said he can give me something for the pain so I paid for the painkillers. I asked for water to drink and they said no - they cannot provide water," she says.

She says she was then told to drive herself to hospital but when she protested that she couldn't walk, the staff all left her and returned to their posts.

Ngcobo says another security guard told her Checkers Hyper should have called the mall's paramedics - who are available to respond to any injury in the shopping centre.

She says after the incident, she was contacted by Checkers Hyper - saying it was consulting with its legal department.

"Somebody called me from headquarters, saying they are going to give me flowers.  saying they are going to give a bunch of flowers. I said no, that's an insult," she said.

Several attempts by Newswatch to speak to the store's management were unsuccessful.

In an emailed response, Pavilion's Centre Management apologised to Ngcobo, promising to make sure Checkers Hyper responds adequately to her.
