Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
KZN's municipal debt for electricity has escalated to around
R675-million.
The province's Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs says it's assisting the eDumbe, Mthonjaneni, Abaqulusi and Inkosi Langalibalele local municipalities to settle their outstanding payments.
However, Mpofana Local Municipality - also in arrears with Eskom - now owes the utility close to R293.5-million.

MEC Sipho Hlomuka says they'll continue to support these municipalities.
"Arising from our mediation efforts and support in developing credible payment plans, four municipalities have drastically reduced their debts namely Ulundi, Newcastle, Msunduzi and Endumeni.
"We will continue to support and monitor municipalities."
