SA remains unprepared for climate-related threats: Salga
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The South African Local Government Association says municipalities and communities in the country are ill-prepared for climate-related threats.
SALGA's Slindile Maphumulo says as the KZN floods have shown, the country needs plans to mitigate the impact of disasters when they strike.
She was speaking at a seminar on the impact of climate change and changing weather patterns.
"A lot of this is also caused by South African infrastructure and facilities that were designed decades ago without the climate future in mind."

"The apartheid planning systems, and at that time, yes, they were good, but with more people coming into our municipal spaces, we do not have that capacity to take on more people."
Maphulo says corruption also plays a role in the lack of preparation by municipalities.
"Our appointment of incompetent service providers, corruption, BBE systems and engineers that are lacking extensive experience to build proper climate-resilient infrastructure."
