EFF, Afriforum reactions differ on Trump's land comments

The EFF's Julius Malema says he and the party suspect President Cyil Ramaphosa and the DA are somehow involved in the tweet by US President Donald Trump on the South African land issue.

"They do not believe in expropriation of land without compensation, including Cyril himself. They want to use these types of threats to get out of this thing. We must never be fooled here. We are not kids," Malema said.

Trump says he's asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to look into land and farm seizures in South Africa - as well as what he's called the large scale killing of South African farmers.

At a press briefing, Malema says Trump is sharing the sentiments of white South Africans.

He says Trump's views are to be expected.

"If South Africans are not ready to expropriate the land because they are scared of sanctions, and of backlash then don't vote for the EFF. If you vote for us, then we will expropriate land. Donald Trump, Britain and the EU will come for us," Malema said.

Meanwhile, Afriforum says it's pleased US President Donald Trump has spoken out on the land issue in South Africa.

Earlier this year - Afriforum went on a US roadshow to highlight what it said was the ongoing killings of white farmers.

Afriforum's Kallie Kriel says government should rethink its position to avoid losing investment.

"What we do not want is for the US to economically withdraw from South Africa because that would be harmful to all of us. Afriforum never tells anybody to disinvest from Zimbabwe, or Venezuela. Investors are going to do that anyway so the best we can do is to prevent that by getting investors and economic powers to warn South Africa beforehand so that the SA government can rethink their position," Kriel said.

The South African government has rejected Trump's comment - saying it's a narrow perception that seeks to divide the nation.

It says the land issue is being handled in a responsible manner.
